JOB SUMMARY:

 

A Coach is responsible for leading, supervising, and developing student-athletes in the assigned sport. This includes planning practices, teaching sport-specific skills, promoting academic success, ensuring safety, and modeling positive sportsmanship. Coaches work closely with the Athletic Director, school staff, families, and community members to support the mission and vision of Rock Point Community School. Head Coaches oversee program development and staff coordination; Assistant Coaches support all aspects of team operations.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Practice & Skill Development – Plan and conduct practices that develop fundamental and advanced skills while teaching rules, strategies, and techniques aligned with NFHS, AIA, and NAIC standards.
  2. Supervision & Safety – Supervise student-athletes before, during, and after practices, games, travel, and school-sponsored activities; maintain a safe environment through proper equipment use, safety protocols, and injury-prevention practices.
  3. Academic Eligibility – Monitor academic progress to ensure athletes meet eligibility requirements, including maintaining a 2.0 GPA and no more than one F.
  4. Logistics & Administration – Coordinate schedules, game times, transportation, and travel with the Athletic Director; maintain updated rosters; complete required reports such as game summaries, injury reports, and incident documentation.
  5. Equipment & Uniform Management – Oversee distribution, tracking, and collection of uniforms and equipment.
  6. Communication & Parent Engagement – Communicate expectations, schedules, concerns, and student progress with parents and guardians.
  7. Representation, Conduct & Sportsmanship – Model professional conduct and positive leadership consistent with RPCS, AIA, and NAIC expectations; ensure athletes represent the school respectfully; demonstrate sportsmanship and fair play; uphold proper conduct for players and self; and maintain current knowledge of rules.
  8. Mentorship & Athlete Development – Provide mentorship, set clear expectations, and support student-athletes’ personal growth, sportsmanship, and team culture.
  9. Collaboration & Game-Day Operations – Collaborate with staff and officials; assist with facility setup and game-day operations, including officiating, scorekeeping, scoreboard operation, and other duties needed to support contests at all levels.
  10. Other Duties as Assigned – Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Athletic Director or administration to support the athletic program and school operations.

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  1. Support and comply with the Rock Point Community School philosophy, mission, and vision statement.
  2. Complete four (4) hours of Prevention of Sexual Harassment training annually.
  3. Complete two (2) hours of SCAN procedures and reporting training annually.
  4. Maintain confidentiality and proper handling of student information in accordance with FERPA.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School diploma or equivalency.
  2. Must complete the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching course, or an AIA-approved equivalent, within forty-five (45) days of hire.
  3. Must complete the NFHS “Concussion in Sports – What You Need to Know” course prior to beginning coaching duties.
  4. Must complete the NFHS Bullying, Hazing, and Inappropriate Behavior course prior to beginning coaching duties.
  5. Head varsity coaches must hold one of the following, as required by AIA:
    1. A valid Arizona Teaching Certificate, or
    2. A valid Arizona Coaching Certificate, or
    3. Completion of the NFHS Level I Certification within forty-five (45) days of hire. Certification must be on file with the principal or designee.
  6. Must hold current CPR & First Aid Certification.
  7. Must meet Federal, Arizona, and Navajo Nation background clearance requirements.
  8. Must possess a valid government-issued driver’s license or identification card.
  9. Must have minimal knowledge of Diné language, culture, history, traditions, and its people for compliance in all aspects of educational programs.
  10. Must submit a current resume.
  11. Prior coaching or playing experience preferred.
