JOB SUMMARY: 

 

Assists in creating an environment that lends to learning and growth for children and helps the individual child to grow in self-understanding for positive maximum use of his/her potential.

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Will support and comply with the Rock Point Community School philosophy, mission, and vision statement.
  2. Will have four (4) hours Prevention of Sexual Harassment training annually.
  3. Will have two (2) hours of SCAN procedures and reporting annually.
  4. Be in compliance and maintain confidentiality according to FERPA (Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act).
  5. Assists in the resolution of discipline problems when appropriate, or as designated by supervisor.
  6. Weekly reports or progress updates including data and relevant information to school leadership team tied to continuous school improvement, AdvancEd goals and objectives, and other reports as requested by Administration.
  7. Create and maintain processes for referral, follow up and documentation.
  8. Counsels students individually and in groups in order to assist them to increase personal growth, self-understanding and maturity
  9. Meets with students on a regular basis and documents all meetings.
  10. Consults with the child's parents regarding required outside counseling and/or updates regarding child’s progress.
  11. Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services available from traditional counseling office.
  12. Provides presentation to the community regarding the Traditional Counseling program.
  13. Contributes toward development of drop-out prevention strategies.
  14. Provides training in guidance for teachers as necessary.
  15. Work closely with Principal to identify correlation of academic success and behavior.
  16. Maintains student records relating to the counseling program and protects their confidentiality.
  17. Provides growth and development classes/trainings for all students.
  18. Works with community and governmental agencies on problems relating to drug abuse and truancy issues.
  19. Assumes responsibility for inventory control in assigned area.
  20. Helps students evaluate career interests and choices (secondary) and designs activities on a yearly basis to expose students to post-secondary opportunities.
  21. Conduct classroom presentations on various topics, such as anti-bullying, internet safety, and respect, or as directed by the school principal.
  22. Assist in all matters considered crises, such as suicide prevention, child abuse, or students who experience trauma.
  23. Assists in supervising students before, during and after school.
  24. Follows the ASCA Framework from the National School Model and incorporates school identified Navajo Values
  25. Assists Culture Specialist in planning of cultural related activities at school.
  26. Establishes, maintains, and supports positive and effective working relationships with all colleagues, departments, outside agencies, and stakeholders including online communication, such as the usage of social media.
  27. Performs other work related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  1. AZ Department of Education Counselor Certificate or equivalent experience in mental health
  2. Bachelor’s degree in School Counseling (preferred), Psychology, Education, or School Administration.
  3. Minimum of five (5) or more years experienced in the field of counseling.
  4. Three years of continuous employment at one school.
  5. Conducts duties and responsibilities in accordance with the RPCS Policy and Procedures, and other reporting policies and procedures of the tribe, state, and federal government.
  6. Must have minimal knowledge of Dine language, culture, history, traditions, and its people for compliance in all aspects of educational programs.
  7. Have current CPR & 1st Aide Certification and basic safety training.
  8. Must have valid government issued driver’s license or identification card.
  9. Must have Federal, Arizona, and Navajo Nation background clearance.
  10. Must have a credit check.
