JOB SUMMARY:
A Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing the appropriate accommodations and
modifications to the set curriculum for their students. Their duties include identifying the
individual needs of their students, creating a supportive and effective learning environment, and
ensuring their students have the resources they need to succeed.


DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Coordinates all IEP meetings, transition, assessment plans, and eligibility meetings.
2. Manages student cases by ensuring IEPs are updated, prior written notice is provided, and
scheduling of initial and reevaluations.
3. Prepares yearly instructional outlines and related daily lesson plans covering relevant units
of study, specifying objectives, activities, and evaluative methods.
4. Continuously evaluates individual and group academic progress through the use of periodic
standardized tests, portfolio assessment, and/or relevant evaluation methods and/or instrument.
5. Maintains control of assigned classes and handles discipline independently except for chronic
or extreme behavior problems.
6. Participates in professional development including PLCs and PODs.
7. Maintains an updated inventory of all supplies and materials and equipment in the classroom.
8. Maintains class records such as IEPs, test results, student cumulative folders, class charts,
daily attendance reports, and progress reports. Submit grades promptly every five and nine weeks.
9. Plans a program of study as much as possible to meet the individual needs, interests, and
abilities of the students and adjust teaching methods based on individual differences among
students.
10. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity
and interests of the students.
11. Prepares for class assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of
supervisor.
12. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with
goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate
the objectives to students.
13. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media, consistent with the physical
limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or students
groups involved.
14. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as
required
15. Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, school policy, and administrative
regulations.
16. Makes provisions for being available to students and parents of education related purposes
outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
17. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for SPED Instructional Aides and monitors.
18. Will assist with Child Find, Parent Training, and other Parent Involvement activities.
19. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
20. Establishing, maintaining, and supporting positive and effective working relationships with
colleagues, departments, outside agencies, and stakeholders involves clear communication,
collaboration, and mutual respect.
21. Utilizes various communication channels, including social media, can enhance connectivity and
engagement, fostering stronger connections and facilitating effective collaboration.
22. Performs other duties as assigned.


REQUIREMENTS:
1. Will support and comply with the Rock Point Community School philosophy, mission, and vision
statement.
2. Will have four (4) hours Prevention of Sexual Harassment training annually.
3. Will have two (2) hours of SCAN procedures and reporting annually.
4. Be in compliance and maintain confidentiality according to FERPA (Family Educational Rights &
Privacy Act).


QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Arizona Department of Special Education Teacher Certification
2. MA degree in Special Education or BA in related field with minimal of five (5) years’
experience working with special education students.
3. Must have HIPPA/Privacy in House Training (confidentiality training).
4. Have advanced knowledge of special education and gifted and talented education laws and
regulations.
5. Have advanced knowledge of special education program referral process, evaluation, development,
and implementation of individual education programs.
6. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
7. Must have a valid government issued driver’s license or identification card.
8. Must have Federal, Arizona, and Navajo Nation background clearances.
